Training the Next Generation of the NHS Workforce

At Plains View Surgery, we are proud to play an active role in shaping the future workforce of the NHS — both clinical and non-clinical.

Medical Students

We regularly host medical students from the University of Nottingham. During your consultation, you may notice a medical student observing your clinician, or you may be offered an appointment directly with a medical student. Please rest assured that all students are closely always supervised by an experienced GP.

Every patient seen by a medical student is reviewed and discussed with their supervising GP, and no treatment or medication can be initiated without approval. Medical student appointments are typically slightly longer to allow for learning and discussion, but we kindly ask that you bring only one problem to the consultation.

When booking an appointment, our reception team will confirm whether it is with a medical student. If you prefer not to see a student, please let the receptionist know. These appointments are not available to book online. The overall supervisor and GP Tutor for medical students is Dr Ahmad.

Foundation Year 2 Resident Doctors

We also train Foundation Year 2 Resident Doctors. These are fully qualified doctors and have completed their initial training after medical school. They spend four months with us as part of their GP rotation.

During their induction, these doctors may observe consultations before running their own clinics under the supervision of a named GP. They can request investigations, make referrals, and recommend treatments, all of which are reviewed by their supervising GP. Occasionally, they may also carry out home visits for housebound patients when appropriate.

They have appointments which are slightly longer to support their development, but we ask that you bring only one issue per consultation. These appointments are not available to book online. The overall supervisor for Foundation Year 2 Doctors is Dr Ahmad.

GP Registrars

We are also proud to train GP Registrars – qualified doctors who have completed their foundation training and are now specialising in general practice. You may see them sitting in with other clinicians during their induction period before they begin running their own clinics.

GP Registrars are experienced doctors and have more clinical autonomy than medical students or FY2s, though they continue to be supervised by an experienced

GP. They can initiate investigations, make referrals, prescribe medications, and undertake home visits for housebound patients where appropriate.

The overall supervisors for GP Registrars are Dr Filby and Dr Khan.

Pharmacy Students

Modern general practice depends on a wide range of healthcare professionals. As part of this, we also host Pharmacy Students from the University of Nottingham. They work under the supervision of our experienced pharmacists, Milan and Kathryn.
